A brand new offering for us here at Rins, this outstanding naturally processed coffee comes from the Asman Gayo Mill in Sumatra.
Run by cup of excellence winner Asman Arianto, the mill serves producers from the surrounding Pantan Musara villages. These producers were displaced following a natural disaster a few years ago and the mill has allowed them to rebuild their lives with a new focus on coffee production.
This coffee is a community blend, with many smallholders providing coffees to make up the lot. This is incredibly common in Aceh, where the average farm size is just one hectare.
The region is incredibly diverse geographically, with beaches and swampy inlands on the low ground rising to rainforests and volcanic soil of the Barisan Mountains, where the coffee is produced.
This unique terroir and careful processing create a sweet, fruity, boozy and complex cup, which reminds us of chewy strawberry laces, pomegranatey syrop de grenadine and a delicious, savoury spice.
