Once again, we've returned to Rwanda for a real gem. Twongerekawa Coko is a cooperative of 1200 farms in the Gakenke region, consisting of all female farmers. The coffee cherries are processed by Twongerekawa at the Coko wet mill.

This one is full of deep chocolate flavours with a hint of green apple and black tea

Gakenke is situated in the North West of Rwanda near the Volcano national park. The country is often rereferred to as the "the land of a thousand hills", resulting in many areas of high altitude.

The altitude, rich volcanic soils and tropical rainfall are the perfect storm for growing this exceptional coffee. As always with Rwandan coffee, you will get a typical floral note due to such altitudes (up to 2000 metres above sea level [MASL]).

Processing

Cherries are hand-picked at their optimum ripeness and are floated to pick out any that may be over/under ripe. The cherries are then de-pulped and fermented for 12 to 18 hours, they are subsequently washed under high pressure. Grading channels are then used to sort the beans by density, separating the higher quality, more dense beans for drying. Throughout the drying period the beans are turned regularly to ensure even drying, reducing the risk of defect.

We hope that the careful processing of these beans from source in the hills of Rwanda to our more humble hills here in the Lake District is demonstrated in the deliciousness of this coffee. We hope you enjoy!
