BREW GUIDE: Stove top

The stove top brewer, also known as a moka pot, is an easy and delicious way to enjoy espresso-like coffee at home without splashing out on expensive machinery. Popularised by Italian manufacturer Bialetti in the 1930s, the Moka Pot has since become a household staple and a design icon for coffee lovers across the globe.

Whether you’re new to this brew method, or a seasoned pro with a well loved pot on your kitchen worktop, this brew method will ensure you get the very best out of your morning coffee.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • A stove top brewer

  • Freshly ground coffee

  • Hot water

  • A stove, heat plate or similar heat source

  • Your favourite coffee cup

METHOD

  1. Grind 15-17g of coffee. You’ll be looking for a medium-fine grind, slightly coarser than table salt.

  2. Boil your kettle with clean, fresh water. We’d recommend using filtered water but beautiful Lake District tap will do just fine.

  3. Add your hot water to the bottom chamber, to the fill line or just below the valve.

  4. Fill the basket with your freshly ground coffee and carefully level the bed with your finger. Don’t compact the coffee.

  5. Screw the top of the brewer on. Be careful and watch your fingers - the bottom can get hot with the boiling water in there.

  6. Pop on the stove over a medium heat and ensure the lid is open.

  7. Coffee should soon begin to bubble and pour up through the inner spout. Once the black gold stops pouring, or if it starts to splutter, your coffee is ready to remove from the heat.

  8. Now the best part – pop the lid down, pour into your favourite coffee cup and enjoy!
